The ACLU Nativity *pic*

As reported by many over the web last week, the Republicans at a Texas University have made a tongue-in-cheek display of the nativity scene, according to the ACLU:

The Young Conservatives of Texas - University of Texas Chapter announced today that they will be displaying an “ACLU Nativity Scene” on the West Mall of the University of Texas campus on Monday and Tuesday, December 4th and 5th. The group’s intent is to raise awareness on the extremity of the ACLU, and bring to light its secular-progressive efforts to remove Christmas from the public sphere. The display, the first of its kind in the nation, will feature characters that are quite a bit different than the standard crèche.

“We’ve got Gary and Joseph instead of Mary and Joseph in order to symbolize ACLU support for homosexual marriage, and of course there isn’t a Jesus in the manger,” said Chairman Tony McDonald. “The three Wise Men are Lenin, Marx, and Stalin because the founders of the ACLU were strident supporters of Soviet style Communism. The whole scene is a tongue-in-cheek way of showing the many ways that the ACLU and the far left are out of touch with the values of mainstream America.”

The scene will also display a terrorist shepherd and an angel in the form of Nancy Pelosi.

“The ACLU and other left-wing extremist groups are working diligently to destroy American’s rights to the free expression of religion,” said Executive Director Joseph Wyly. “We’ve already seen in Chicago an attempt to censor the nativity by a city government this week. It’s just more evidence that there is a War on Christmas being waged by the far-left in this country.”
And here's a pic:

That is an outright lie.

The ACLU isn't not trying to prevent freedom of religion. They are letting the fucking wackjobs know that it includes freedom from religion.

Funny, I was always under the impression that this country had the freedom of religion, not from religion.

The founders of the ACLU were communist and did have an agenda. You could make a very strong argument that they still have an agenda.

Given we had a lot deist founders who didn't think very highly of organized religion, I don't know what makes you so sure of that.

How is that relevant? When it comes to "the war on christmas" and separation of church/state issues, no one is speaking of deeply personal, private, unorganized spirituality. They're talking about the kind of organized religion that tries to shove its tenants down your throat.

Frankly, I don't care if someone wants to put a nativity scene on public property...as long as I have the right to put up a satanist symbol or a pentagram up right next to it.

The government must allow all or nothing, but for some reason I doubt most conservative christians would like other religions putting up symbols (can you imagine a wiccan or other 'ungodly' religion setting up shop next to a nativity scene?)

I love how you state that as if the issue were settled and no one thinks otherwise.

Deism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

And even if some of the founders weren't deist per se, they were products of the enlightenment and many had a healthy distrust of religion. Given that, I don't know why you summarily dismiss that they could have wanted freedom from religion.

There were actually about 5 or so.

But the rest of the 50 men that signed the Constitution were Christians.

christian does not necessarily mean they didn't have deist tendencies and/or distrust organized religion.

But it does mean that they subscribed to an organized religion.

Oh, I completely agree.

However, that in NO WAY means "freedom from religion."

Sounds like some subscribers of Islam. They're allowed to worship in this country until they break the law or violate anti-terrorism laws... much like any other person of any religious faith.

There was one true deist, and the other leaned that way, but we're necessarily complete deists.
