I bought Thank You For Smoking last week

It was a great movie. Was funny and had a great libertarian message too.

It has some clever points to make about arguments and framing the debate. It is actually a pretty good movie, well written. Honestly, some of the ideas in the dialouge made me think of this forum. I think the posters here would find it worthwhile to watch.

It was all about choice. Everyone knows that smoking is bad for you, but that doesn't mean the government should try to stop us from having the right to smoke or not. I would recommend everyone watch it.

That is what I thought. I don't smoke. The stuff makes me sick even in the air in an enclosed space. But I will fight for your right to make that choice and won't treat you like some "killer" when you do so. I respect your mature right to make a lifestyle choice. I thought that is what "liberals" were about?

I say make the damn things illegal or go FUCK yourself. I don't like this "smoking is bad" parenting by self-rightious blowhards!

And yes, you will find that cigarette smoke has some of the same chemicals that can be found in Urine. You will also find h2O in your damn pee shit for head!

And what about when the cigarette companies were telling everyone it was perfectly safe to smoke and no one had any idea it was really bad for you?

Or what about targeting teenagers who generally lack the skills needed to make an informed choice?

Obviously nowadays it's different. The information is out there. I'm all for the companies being required to clearly explain the risks of using their product.

I don't understand why people smoke in the first place. to me, smoking is just another way of committing suicide, only it's a slow death.

Actually, so was the government. What are you going to do about their culpability? It was the government agencies that decided tobacco products were as safe as milk and honey, and ensured the populace. Don't you remember, it wasn't so long ago was it, that deathsticks were part of standard military rations?

Or what about targeting teenagers who generally lack the skills needed to make an informed choice?
You have to be 18 to purchase smokes, and that has been the case for quite some time. Under 18, you have very little money to purchase anything, and under 16, you probably don't have any money at all that didn't come from your legal guardians. It's up to them to make sure you're not buying and consuming products that would do you harm.

Obviously nowadays it's different. The information is out there. I'm all for the companies being required to clearly explain the risks of using their product.
The information is out there? You know, children can still purchase alcohol legally- in the form of mouthwash or vanilla extract. Kids can still get ahold of other dangerous things. Even adults seem to be hellbent on harming themselves, whether on cigarrettes, clumsy top-heavy automobiles, or anything else. Personal responsibilty is the key.

So what about the people that don't want to take responsibility for their actions?

The tobacco companies knew for a long time that their products caused cancer and other diseases and kept quiet about it, making it impossible for consumers to make any type of informed decision about whether or not to smoke.

The general public did not know about the health risks associated with it, and there were even campaigns to tell the public that it was safe.

Sure, responsibility is in the hands of the parents to make sure their kids make good choices and aren't doing things they don't want them to, however the power of advertising on a not fully developed brain which is really unable to fully weigh the consequences of their decisions (which is true for many things and why we have laws protecting minors from lots of stuff) is well known and should be prevented..

Personal responsibility should go a long way, however as long as we're treating corporations as some sort of individual with many of the same rights as a person, they need to be responsible as well. Targeting advertising to children is irresponsible and they should be held accountable for it

they called them "cancer sticks" in WWII, people knew they weren't good for them for a very long time.

no one over 50 can say they are "dangerous" because they have been putting the labels on for 30 years now that say YOU GONNA DIE.
