should you apologize to the visitor, who isn't fat and in no way did you mean to say the person was fat, you simply slurred your words when you were talking to someone else...or the person who spun it to hurt your visitor?

it was forced, and the crime is that it wasn't even necessary in the first place. do any of you apologize for things you haven't done? why should kerry?. its only because of our political climate that it was even necessary.

But it is his fault he made a "slip of the tongue" and insulted our troops. That alone is worthy of an "I'm sorry." If I'm on stage giving a speech and the word "nigger" pops out of my mouth, the first thing I'd do when I heard gasps is apologize. He said it was an accident and therefore wouldn't apologize for it. That just shows no class. Just because less than half the nation voted for you in 04 doesn't mean that as a public figure you're not responsible for what you say.

Part of the risk of making politically charged jokes is offending someone, either purposely or accidentally. When you're an elected politician and that happens, the appropriate thing to do is to apologize. Kerry flat our refused.

My sister had a baby and sent a picture in email. Our uncle replied and spelled spelled "gorgious" *so* wrong that spell-check changed it to "hidious" and he missed it before he hit send.

Yes, he SHOULD have apologized. The very first time someone said "you know, that could be interpreted to mean..." then he should have said "I know. I missed a word that sort of changed the meaning. Sorry about that."

i'm beginning to see both sides of this issue here because of this post and thorgrims, but imagine the above story with your uncle. would your sister have demanded an apology after she realized your uncle goofed and really meant to say georgeous? what if an aunt on the other side of the family went around telling other family members that he did in fact mean hideous and demanded an apology? who would you fault more, your aunt or your uncle?

But that's not what happened. Use the kerry situation the way it happened. Adjusting kerry's situation to my sister's...

...my uncle sends the badly worded email. Someone points out that he used the wrong word. My uncle then spends the next few days saying "This is stupid. You think I would make fun of a baby?!?! I have children and if you think I'd make fun of children you're stupid." A family holiday is coming up and it's looking like my uncle and his family won't be invited because of how he's acting so he finally bows to pressure from his family and others says "I'm sorry for the misworded email."

John Kerry is awful, and anything we can do further to degrade his political prospects is worth doing. But really, I saw a clip of him making the much-deplored remark, and it was obvious that the dimwit in Iraq that he referred to was George W. Bush, not the American soldier. It was a dumb joke badly delivered, but his meaning was plain. My pleasure in watching JK squirm is just as great as any other conservative's, but something is owed to honesty. There's a lot of fake outrage going round here.
