Ice shelf breaks off

Warwick Vincent of Laval University, who studies Arctic conditions, traveled to the newly formed ice island and couldn't believe what he saw.

"This is a dramatic and disturbing event. It shows that we are losing remarkable features of the Canadian North that have been in place for many thousands of years," Vincent said. "We are crossing climate thresholds, and these may signal the onset of accelerated change ahead."

As many of you may have seen, we just had an enormous ice shelf break off near the north pole and a variety of other ice formations are 90% smaller than what they used to be. I am just curious as to how many more events like this will it take to have those finally concede that there is actually something like "global warming". Regardless of how much impact you feel people have on the environment, i think it is painfully obvious global warming is real. I think we must do everything we can to minimize these affects, not only for global warming but for our own health's sake. We need alternative energies that do not burn fossil fuels. Wind, water, solar, nuclear, whatever it takes we need solutions and need them now. The free market is far to reactive, and not nearly enough proactive. The free market would wait until there is an absolute need, and we need to take action before there is a need. If we wait it will be to late. These means we need legislation. It might not happen in my lifetime but at this current pace it could happen in my children or grandchildrens life time. Personally i do not want to be part of a generation who had an opportunity to try and prevent potential isses, only to snooze in the interests of oil companies and their economic prosperity.

I just watched the CNN link video clip. That's a big chunk of ice alright!

It has been stable for now but could break away and be a floating threat to area Oil Production. Wound't that be a global warming story!

I would kinda if a giant ice chunk that broke off from global warming went and took out some oil production

Imagine that ice broke off!
I am sure that never happened before.
Of course it had to be global warming . It could never have been due to gravity or any other cause.- TZS

Because it absolutely, positively couldn't be a natural occurance. It's not like there is precedence, oh wait. There is!

Let's compare tens of thousnads of years to a 30 years

So anyway, I am curious, how much climate change must happen in the next few decades before you say its unnatural?

I am assuming you have some numbers to gauge how fast the climate changes occurs naturally without an input

No reputable climatologists believe that.

Why should you?

Unless you can post a link here blaming gravity for the ice sheets to be melting.

That's right. It's the war on science.

Why shouldn't they?

It totally helps their case to look at it all skewed like that.

I would love to hear this as well.

Post a scan of your degrees in climatology while you're at it.

If you would watch the CNN clip you will hear the caution in saying this is do to global warming. Like all science the event needs to be studied!

well since there is proof that much larger swings in temp have happened in shorter periods of time, ~8000 years the temp dropped 4c in 10 years. That period laster 100 years then within a decade it rose to about the current levels.

But what was the cause?

More than likely a change in temperature that drastic is similar to what's happening in the modern times is the introduction of tons of greenhouse gases in the air.

Those are the same greenhouse gases that are being produced by humans now.

most scientists believe in global warming but are unclear if it is natural, human influenced, or even a combination of both.

Most now believe we are contributing to it.

For higher C02 levels? No.

For adding more C02 to a system that needs to have balance for us to survive? Yes.
