There's no selective principle, there is nothing that would hurt american civil rights by another religion using its holy book into a situation where only one religions holy book has been used

i doubt you will find anyone on 'the left' ever truly complain about the use of a holy book in a swearing in ceremony (beyond commenting on the retarded nature of it), if that is what the incoming office holder wantes.

It never really happened! It was just political picture taking. It was Ellison who made the suggestion that he would take his oath on the Koran and his error that started this nonsense. No book is used in the actual oath taking.....

He was holding it then, and had a ceremony later...you're making a semantic arguments based on the theory that christianity has a lesser role in government than is commonly interpreted...which is amusing

i know this, but look at the backlash he received when the story came out. even some on this board were griping about it.

I am sure some athiest backed by the ACLU will file a complaint against this blatant seperation violation of religion by the end of the week!
this issue is akin to having personal autonomy with religious symbols on memorial stones, which the aclu wholly condones, and has fought for. but i'd hate for the truth to ruin an opportunity to bash the aclu.

I tend to agree with whomever said Jefferson owned & read the Koran not out of some reverence for the faith of Muhammed, but more as a matter of historical, political, and cultural curiousity. Many Americans who aren't believers in Christianity have a Bible lying around their home somwhere. My father owns a copy of the Book of Mormon, and even read it, but he's not a Mormon. Obviously, there's no way to prove this (since the only way to know for sure would be to ask Thomas Jefferson, and even then you'd have to assume he was answering you truthfully) but use your common sense: Which do you honestly believe is more likely to be the case? That Jefferson was interested in the culture, history, and ideological motivations of the Islamic world, or that he was religiously sympathetic to Islam? Any intellectually honest person knows which of those two is far more likely.

No, there ought to be a ban on swearing on volumes comprised of low-brow, hack writing.

(Which, according to what I've heard, wouldn't be very good news for the Book of Mormon, either.)

Yes, but I don't believe you, or much of anyone else, sincerely believes Thomas Jefferson revered the Koran as the basis for a religious perspective to which he adhered in his heart, yet did not outwardly practice, as you seem to be implying. Anything's possible, but not everything's plausible.

If it is an old-fashioned tradition of no consequence, then why are you guys having this discussion in the first place?

Swearing in

In my humble opinion I see no problem with being sworn in using a Koran ( if this did in fact happen). You can't say we have freedom of religion in this country only when it's the religion you yourself are most comfortable with can you?
Though I didn't watch everyone being sworn in on c-span those I did see appeared to just raise their hands during the short ceremony, I didn't notice any type of books but like I said i didn't see them all.

You are amusing in your defence of religious liberty in government. Let me give you a clue. On the dollar it says "God" but that is not the important religious image on the George Wash$! But the ignorant can't see any better than the blind!

Hey, swearing in on a comic book should be ok now that using the Koran
is ok.
After all the comic book inspires less murder/violence and likely has far more truth printed in it!
I certainly wish that I had one of those famous , powerful , Koran flushing
toilets being used by our military .
I could flush down all the junk mail I get everyday .
Also would come in handy if ever a Koran fell into my hands.
One quick flush and Allah goes bye bye with a bath to boot.-TZS

It really amazes me. Depressing that people who say they love this country are blinded to the one thing that really seperates us from most of the world.

This is a mainstream political discussion board. Subjects of little consequence tend to be the bread & butter of such forums, alas. I usually prefer to spend my time at boards filled with Fascists, Communists, Muslims, Atheists, and Pagans all issuing philosophical treatises at each other, and the like. Much more interesting, as a general rule, but what the Hell. There's an election coming up next year, and people that alienated from American society just don't share my enthusiasm for electoral politics.

They can swear in on the latest issue of "Chicks With Dicks," George Lincoln Rockwell's personal copy of Mein Kampf, or even (shudder) a copy of Trump: The Art of the Deal, for all I care. Certainly no one is stopping them. But the voters at home might be less apt to re-elect....

Gee, I've toned down my accusations?
Why because I used the word inspires? ha
The koran can only inspire Islamists to go about murdering innocent peoples, the book can not do the deed itself silly.
I have never and never will tone down my complete disgust for Islam and the koran. It is a evil ,murder inspiring false book based upon the life of an evil ,murdering false want to be prophet!

Pussy, maroon, me?
If you ever talked to me in person those would be the last words you would use to describe me.
In fact appears to me that you were projecting there.
