New Orleans Fears Another Hurricane

Print Story: New Orleans nervously eyes tropical storm Chris on Yahoo! News
New Orleans nervously eyes tropical storm Chris

Wed Aug 2, 3:19 PM ET

New Orleans cast a wary eye toward tropical storm Chris on Wednesday and put the final touches on a reaction plan that could empty the city which last evacuated after Hurricane Katrina.

"I'm scared to go through another one," said forklift driver Inos Jones, 50, who stayed through Katrina last August until he was rescued. "If they have another hurricane, you can just shut Louisiana for good."

The National Hurricane Center projected that the center of Chris could strengthen to hurricane force within 36 hours.

Local forecasters in New Orleans said the storm could enter the Gulf of Mexico and head toward the city over the weekend. But its path remained uncertain.

Mayor Ray Nagin told a news conference the city administration had a reaction room ready and was watching to see if the storm entered the Gulf on Saturday.

"If it does, we will be on serious high alert," he said.

The city's mandatory evacuation plan aims to move all residents out of the city rather than offer a shelter of last resort, hoping to avoid replicating last year's mistakes when thousands of people were trapped by the rising waters as 80 percent of the city flooded.

Hurricane Katrina killed 1,336 people in five states.

The city is lining up drivers for evacuation. Nagin said National Guard troops could also step in if necessary.

Nagin said he was worried about the thousands of people in government-issue trailers, which cannot stand winds above 40 or 50 miles per hour, (64-80 kph) who would need extra time to get out.

Not all residents were nervous. "I got too much work to worry. I'd rather face the rain than face my boss," said 17-year-old construction worker Kalen Wilson.
At what point do these people say "Hey ya know what, maybe living below sea level in a hurricane zone ain't such a bright idea?"

How can these people expect sympathy if they get hit again? Seriously, if they get hit again they might as well close New Orleans for good. Stop wasting our money.

That's what I don't get. These people were all just relocated and chose to go back. And somehow the majority of them said hey, you know what... my construction job back in New Orleans was well worth taking the risk again, there's no other construction work where I'm at now...

There is probably alot of construction work in NO, but I wouldn't choose to put my family there again

I'm sure there is. But it's not like you can't find construction work in any town in this country. Both people interviewed for this story are doing construction...

If New Orleans wasn't such an important port I think we probably would have abandoned it long ago.. and honestly, if as a nation, we're not willing to invest the billions and billions of dollars needed to ensure the levees are state of the art and anyone living there is protected, we should probably abandon it now.

It's a losing battle

The government has already given like 100 billion to them. How much fucking money do they need?

Yep. Whenever a Hurricane comes our way, if it's above a Category 1, we leave up north for 3 days or so.

We once rode our a Category 3. Hurricane Floyd I think it was. Worst fucking choice in our lives. The insurance had plenty of fun with our roof.

Which was displaced, and semi replaced.

My family was here during Andrew, but where I lived, we didn't get hit too hard.

Hurricanes are a pain in the ass. Insurance companies hate us down here in Miami. Very expensive also.

Well, if insurance companies pull out it'll be hard to rebuild. Maybe it's destined for failure either way

Then make it like Galvenston. Large port but nobody lives there so when a major hurricane comes through the lost isnt that high

Then the govt will step in like flood insurrance. Couple rivers in the North Bay flood every year. Everyone knows they flood, insurrance companies have pulled out long ago but people still live there
