Heat, humidity combine to torture East
By DERRILL HOLLY, Associated Press Writer 32 minutes ago

Record-breaking heat and oppressive humidity made people across the eastern half of the country miserable Wednesday and sent tourists in the nation's capital scrambling for relief in the cool marble halls of Capitol Hill.
Is anyone else getting tired of the sensationalized news? Enough is enough already. Just tell me the news, we don't need all this crap. The word "torture" is getting through around too commonly lately as well. That's starting to piss me off.

But "oppressive", "torture", etc... it's the friggin weather.

Would you rather the headlines only say "It's Hot" or "It's Cold"?

It's just that we are all so familiar with those words now thanks to the current Administration, so they are sticking with terminology that we know...

I think when you use certain adjectives to describe something like weather, you lessen the impact they have when they're used to describe regimes or the way people are treated

i think IminWonderland is right, since those are words that have become 'popularized' or almost 'glamourized' in the recent years, they are now the catchy terms. of course it's sensationalism, but that's what sells, right?

Yes, i would. If that was the responsible level that the news held themselves to, we might actually get some journalists that are worth listening to.

Instead we get a sitcom for the evening news, that constantly tries to scare us into watching what's coming up at 11

"A popular minivan may blow up and kill your whole family at random.. which one is it??.. watch us tomorrow at 11!"

to the news in general, they should all be considered entertainment shows with no redeeming value

But they are all competing for your viewership.
Of course they are going to make you think you need to see their broadcast. Companies make you think you need to buy their things and that's the center of advertisement.

That's all this really is.

It just devalues it when you use it for everything.

I don't see it. Words mean the same thing to me no matter how many times I hear them. They are just words that describe things. They don't have a limit on how many times they can be used and they don't degrade.

It's like my Mom who like to rant about swear words. She says "swear words meant something in my time. now they mean nothing because people use them all the time". Guess what. She uses them a lot and she still thinks they have meaning. And try swearing to a cop. They think those words still have meaning.

I know what it is, and knowing that I have absolutely no respect for them...

I love when shit like this (youtube link) happens to the news..

The point is when it comes to words like that, you begin to become desensitzied to them and what they really mean when used in more serious instances.

It's like what happens when someone watches too much porn, eventually they become desensitized mentally.

Words are just words obviously, whether you're offended or whatever is a personal choice when it comes to swearing, but stuff like this (while not a big deal), is, imo, indicitive of why we seemingly don't care so much about things that happen in other parts of the world, like the Sudan, etc..
