Gonna ask for a raise.

Hey guys, gonna ask for a raise and am debating how to go about it.

I've been here for 14 months, when I ask it'll be 15 months.

I'm consistantly ranked 1 or 2 out of the 5 of us in the group. I contribute as much or more, faster and more effeciently than many who have been here years. Also, the company continues to have record setting revenue/margins. So now is a good time for the company and I figure a good time to ask for a raise. I'm also starting my MBA which would hopefully be viewed as another reason to give me a raise and keep me around.

There's two approaches.
1) Ask my boss for some time to meet and come in prepared. I can lay out a case of how I make things more effecient, what I provide customers, employees and the company as a whole. I can write this up and bring it in with me to the meeting.
2) Tell him why I "need" a raise. This approach by itself would be in my opinion because a raise should be based on performance. So I think I can rule out 2 all by itself.

My thoughts are do both. My boss is a great guy and the type of guy that wants to know you on a personal level. So he knows a few of my goals including financial goals. So I figured the best approach would be to lead off with how I'm an asset to the company and what I do to make us more effecient and serve our customers better than the competition. Then I could follow up with I am helping meet company goals and I think the company should reciprocate (is that the right word?) by helping me meet my personal goals including saving for my childrens college (I wanna start that before we have kids) and saving an emergency fund for when we do have kids.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Tips?

A mixture of 1 and 2 would be good. I mean, you don't want to go in there and be like, "uh, so, uh, yeah, uh, money plz" or anything like that obviously.. but on the same token, if your boss likes to know you personally, make part of it personal.

Your constant drive to improve yourself (MBA) so that you can further help the company, along with your performance, etc, and financial goals are how I'd frame it. I'd keep the "financial goals" a small aspect of it though.

Who doesn't want a million dollars? Or a raise? You should show him why you're worth the extra money more than you should explain to him that you want more money, and for what.

Asking for a raise is always a difficult thing to do. I suggest showing up naked and telling your boss you're going to do this until you get one.

Sounds like you've got it covered, though, seriously.

Yeah, i think explaining how you feel you're worth a little more to the company than you're currently being paid is a good way to go.

Either that or bring a gun and let it do the talking.

He sounds like a nice guy so slash his tires and leave a note on his car telling him you can offer protection for a small fee.....I mean, you know me and know that's how I would handle it.

You're young and talented. Lay it on the line for them and let them know that you know that the market can bear rewarding you for your efforts and investing in you as an asset. Bosses can't argue with that, and that lets them know that you know what you're worth.

I work for the government, so asking for a raise is futile Well, they give me a raise every year, but it's pitiful. This coming January I'll start at a new pay... $860 before taxes spread out of 12 months, which is right at 2%. It's bs man

same here, I just got my review and I can expect anywhere from a 2.5%-4% raise

This is after a year of very hard work, perfect reviews, etc... way to motivate me

oh well, I knew this was coming when I started, so I'm not pissing and moaning too much (In fact really not at all, since I can find a higher paying job as soon as I decide I want to )
