Raising minimum wage affects very, very little. It will not increase unemployment because it affects very little. It will not increase the cost of living, because it affects very little.

A tax increase, if not an overwhelming %, will have some very minor short term affects but will iron out over a brief amount of time.

It seems kind of irrelevant considering the points being made against minimum wage. To spell it out a bit more, the individuals that oppose it are basing their stance on the fact that it's detrimental to the economy and it doesn't help the general public. However, it does increase taxes, thereby increasing budgets, thereby increasing money that's circulating in government, thereby giving some of the higher ups an increase in pay. Naturally, it makes sense that the majority of the politicians would be in favor of this.

That part is where conservatives get rabid for no reason, and you acknowledge it doesn't help anyone. If it doesn't help anyone that means people are already making more than 7.25 an hour, thus it does not hurt business because there is no increased labor cost. There is nothing detrimental about it. Now if they raised it to $8.50 or $10.00 then we would be having a different conversation.

Sure there are isolated cases of those making less than 7.25 an hour, but those jobs are few and far between. In effect, it is meaningless "feel good" legislation... that gives people the impression democrats care about working people.

Jobs paying minimum wage are few and far between?

Raising minimum wage doesn't help ANYONE in the general public. It only benefits those that are in office or work for the state. It will help people temporarily, and that's about it.

Jobs paying the federal minimum wage are few and far between. Most states have a higher minimum wage than the fed. I read that something like 3% of American jobs are minimum wage jobs (again, federal minimum wage jobs).

It didn't happen in 1995.. the walls didn't tumble down, the economy didn't crash, small businesses didn't fail. It helped the lower paid workers.

I don't see how people can be content having a wage stay the same while the cost of living has gone up and so has inflation SINCE the last hike.

According the the Bureau of labor statistics (in 2004 anyway), 2.7% of all hourly paid employees made minimum wage. There are further stats that show 25% of these workers are 16-19 years old, and that a good percentage of those jobs were also part timers.

I do agree with the increase in minimum wage, however, I am just sayin that it is not going to help that many people in the grand scheme of things. Since it does not help that many people it is not going to be detrimental as some libertarian/conservatives imply. I do agree those 2.7% are getting screwed and need the raise.

Did minimum wage go up 40% in 1995?

I didn't say that raising minimum wage will cause the economy to collapse. I said that it would ultimately raise inflation, increase taxes, and decrease the value of the USD.

There are many other socialistic factors that are collectively working toward collapsing the economy. Raising minimum wage is almost not even worth mentioning, by comparison.

taxes and inflation will rise regardless of minimum wage.

All this does is allow lower income workers to at least somewhat afford to live.

and of course, taxes shot up, unemployment went up, and small businesses failed.

and the only good thing that happened was that people made more money to pay bills

That's just a polite way of saying, "We want to violate the rights of others because we feel that we unrightfully deserve a piece of what they've rightfully earned."

they didn't rise at the same rate.
Congress raised thier wages, they also increase it to compensate for cost of living

So are smoking bans. So is overtime. So is any result of progressive reform.

IIRC you were in favor of many of those things
