If the government sets that standard, why should they have to worry about competitive rates, capitalism, etc.? This is one of the HUGE problems with healtcare as it is...it's too regulated. What would happen if the government did not set that standard? Healthcare would improve, prices would drop, etc., in large because the insurance companies would then be in competition with each other, not to their customers, but to the doctors that accept them! If doctors don't accept them, they don't get customers! If they don't get customers, they don't get money!!! So they would start paying more to the doctors, doctors would then lower their prices because they're actually getting paid, and customers would pay less at the doctor's office. See how this works?

Likewise, wages are too regulated. A similar response would occur if you removed the minimum wage standard.

You seem to think that competition will always lead to lower prices.. in many cases it works, but not when you're dealing with a company's internal costs.

There's a plant here that pays mexicans 2:30/hr. They do it because they can get away with it. Is that an acceptable wage?

Exactly as I thought... you've never had to live on a minimum wage. Regardless of skills, it may happen, and your thoughts might change.

August 20, 1996, President Clinton signed a bill passed by Congress that raises the federal hourly minimum wage from $4.25 to $5.15

I fig'd GA wouldn't have raised min wage over the federal mandate... they're rated one of the most economically free states in the union

How could they have had a lower min wage than the federal? That makes no sense. Here's another site (from Oregon)

U.S. Minimum Wage History

The chart doesn't have specific numbers, but the red dots are the federal min wage and it's easy to see that in 1994 the fed min was over $4

EDIT: Just noticed that even your link shows the federal min at $4.25 at that time

FYI, I did have to live off of minimum wage before. It sucked but it also gave me the motivation to better myself so that I would not have to live that way anymore. My current situation is the result of hard work and a desire to not have to ever live that way again. Maybe if others on minimum wage felt the same way the need for this topic would fail to exist.

AT the time i did not live with mommy and daddy. I was working the counter at pappa johns. I was 18 years old and had moved out of parents house. I had to find any way to make extra money (from cutting peoples grass to detailing cars for my friends) and live pretty much off of ramen noodles. However i did it but was barely surviving. I am 29 now and work as manager for the local tel company.

If you had to support a family, i.e. let's say you lost a job and had to take one at any pay just too keep income flowing, with just you and 1 child how long do you feel you could do it for?

Are you suggesting that minimum wage ought to be enough to support an adult and one child living out on their own?

I didn't say that. I asked a simple question...how long do you think you could do it for at $5.15/hour?

2 months? 6 months? a year?

If that was parent's only job, and we're talking about federal minimum wage, then I would expect them to not last very long at all. Not even a month.
