:rolf: its not going to hurt the industry, the tuna industry as a whole will be fine, the company in question will just move

It's only the average islander that will be affected

I love how you can't tell the difference between an easily exportable tuna canning job, and service jobs in the US that basically can't be exported

Actually you probably can, but who cares when you can get some dirt on Pelosi...maybe we can drag Hillary into this too? Your misogyny goes so far I wouldn't doubt that you'd like it if Pelosi gave nuclear secrets to al-qaeda because despite the damage it'd do to America, hurting the female speaker of the house is more important to you

This is the second post in a row you've responded to me and took what I said out of context and used it against me. A lot of users are getting frustrated by this posting style and it is causing problems on the board.

I can understand the difference. Before trying to figure out what you think another poster can tell the difference between in a rude and demeaning manner I'd suggest reading all of their points on the issue. My posts are backed up by the opinions of the Democrats. I understand Samoa will have a much stronger impact on a minimum wage bill than the US. That's obviously not the point, because the Democrats are pushing it through Samoa as well.

Once again making demeaning insinuations. There's really not much to be said in response to this without breaking the rules. Please stop baiting people. You've been doing this constantly lately and quite honestly I'm tired of giving people infractions for issues directly related to your posting style directed at other users.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., told reporters she has instructed the House Education and Labor Committee to help get the bill changed to "make sure that all of the territories have to comply with the U.S. law on minimum wage."

Her remark Friday followed accusations from Republicans a day earlier that American Samoa, which is not now covered by the $5.15 an hour federal minimum wage, was not included in the law raising the federal pay floor to $7.25 an hour because StarKist has a large cannery in the island chain. StarKist is owned by Del Monte Foods Co., which has its headquarters in San Francisco, Pelosi's district.

If this is so bad for Samoa, why are they bankrupting the island? This whole minimum wage bill is beginning to sound a lot like PC, feel good legislation and actually has nothing to do with the best interests of the people.

First she was crooked for not including them, now she is trying to bankrupt them by adding them after all the republican crying.

Seems like she did the bi-partisan thing and allowed the Republican amendment (essentially anyway) to be included?

Oh either way she can't win. That's the hypocrisy of supporting minimum wage inequally.

Personally I have no problem with Samoa not receiving the wage increase now that their leader has said he doesn't want it. He can't vote for our officials, we shouldn't negatively impact him.

I'm against the minimumw age increase altogether. I'm also against ignoring the wage increase for certain industries/people that have ties to the politicians who wrote the bill. That can't be proven, but it seems to be the case. Now that it's been brought to light they're adding it for Samoa.

I disagree that as well. The right thing for Pelosi to do is to come out herself and say the wage increase is suspended for Samoa because of the economic uniquness of the region. Although it wouldn't be perfect considering the stance a lot of Democrats take where the minimum wage increase does no good and people third world countries should be paid more ie Walmart sweat shops, etc etc...

So either way, it's a hypcocritical stance for the Democrats. Personally if they're gonna raise the wage, Samoa should be excluded. If the wage increase is truly not a PC, feel good legisaltion they would do the moral thing and not harm Samoa. But apparently helping the poor isn't as important as looking good.

Try just getting through two years first!

I can tell you the Republicans are over Clinton. Well the first one anyway. We are not the party that has put their entire future on American Failure in Iraq. God forbid we should prevail and American weakness is not the new message.

So minimum wage law is bad in Somoa, but good for the US ?

And we dont have to export service jobs to screw over the workers. Just fire half the ones working for you and make the rest work harder to keep their job.

In short why did Pelosi not adavnce these arguments? No she caved to this Republican attack non-story! Where was the angry Kerry press conference? It could not be that she wanted to poor cold water on this as soon as possible with the knowledge that the "friendly media" would drop it?

It reminds me of a PBS documentary I saw many years ago. This was just after the Republicans took the House and Senate. And you have these big Dems sitting at a table talking strategy. And one of them says "Did the media get our message out today." As if that is their job! Like it is a given thing for them to do. This was before Fox so I guess they would be right!

I don't see how this bill means there wont be any real changes to how Congress works

With the Samoa thing the GOP was really just looking for a way to tack on a ton of amendments so that it would be less likely to be passed, or at least that's my read on it.. since they've been bypassed for the whole '100 hour' process so far.
