Department chairs are generally the people who have the most information about anything. You tell her you're interested in meeting someone in the program while you're up there, and she'll pick out a top student to show you around

ah, yeah i was aware of that, i've talked to ac ouple different people in Adamian. One lady told me i should expect 6-10 hours of homework PER WEEK for EACH COURSE, which just sounds hard to believe, because it seems unlikely a full time student taking 5 courses is spending 30-50 hours OTHER than the 10 hours of class time each week.

they said the same for undergrad

1 hour in class = 3 hours outside class

it never works that way, at least for me

no no, I mean, contact them and tell them you would like to talk to a real student... don't ask THEM your questions, they don't know shit of what it's like to be a student there.

yeah undergrad i spent in most cases ZERO time each week outsied of class...undergraduate was a lot like high school...i just think that grad school might be totally different. i just looked at one syllabus for a possible class, and it's 16 pages...and i might be taking FOUR of those courses.

yeah, don't ask the chair, ask them who you could contact. typically departments have people in charge of new student stuff. perhaps there's a link to a name in charge of student applicants on their website. i'd contact them. the chairs are alwyas very busy.

Chairs are generally also professors and since it's a master's program, probably have students of their own. Emailing them a request to talk to a student will probably get you one of their own students, and who will know more about professors and such than the student of the chair?

this is true, but most chairs i've ever come in contact with hardly respond to emails of people they don't know. i've typically had to write their adminstrator

ok, i contacted a general email, and they already had a student, who is also prez of the graduate student organization email me, so i've emailed her with my questions, and we'll soon hear back...

the idea of spending 6-10 hours for EACH of FOUR courses a week on homework is simply insane.

If her answers seem too prepared to you, just find a graduate student when you go there and ask them
