Maybe ABC.
720p and 1080i should be good enough for 40" or smaller, IMO.

But if you're closer, say playing vid games or if you dont have a big room (see my living room) then there is a difference. You're also correct not many broadcasts are in 1080p but there will be more as the years roll by, furthermore HDDVD and BlueRay both have the future capability of doing 1080p and even 1440p.

think of it this way... 1024x768 is a similar resolution to 720p....most of us play computer games in 1024x768 or higher. 1440 is like playing in 2048x1536...you can definately tell a difference but as you said earlier it is definately more distinguishable on bigger displays OR up close.

| the problem is finding something 40" or smaller, 42 wont fit where I need to put it very well. I suppose I could squeeze it in or put it somewhere else but I'd really rather not.. there's a nice little area where there's no glare, etc, that the TV is now. Any other place would get glare. Is 42 really the smallest the DLP stuff comes? | ||||

| Well I went to Best Buy / Circuit City and narrowed it down to really about 3 televisions. Two are LCD, one is DLP. 1) Sony KDL-40V2500 40" Bravia V-Series 1080p LCD HDTV - $2499 2) Sony KDL-40S2010 40" Bravia S-Series 720p LCD HDTV - $1799 3) Samsung HL-S4266W 42" DLP 720p HDTV - $989 I didn't see too much of a difference between 1 and 2 quality wise, but if I can find 1 online for closer to 2 I might do that, moving forward 1080p isn't a bad thing to have as more starts to be available in it. 3 looked great, although the picture seemed significantly darker than some of the other TV's around it. May have just been the tuning of that specific television on dark scenes. All of them looked amazing, what do you guys think? The benefits of 1 and 2 is that they'll fit exactly, whereas 3 will be sort of ackward and whatnot. I also wouldn't have to buy a stand, so that's always a plus. Also, note that the prices are Best Buy's prices, not Amazon or anywhere else. | ||||

| For TV's, I wouldn't look away from Sony or Panasonic if you're going LCD. The Sony Bravia series is really good for LCDs, I highly suggest it. Samsung makes good monitors, but I'm not yet sold on their LCD's. For rear proj DLP, there are quite a few that are good. The DLP market right now is so volatile b/c of new technologies and new companies. I suggest going somewhere and looking at the image and size and such. 720p is High Definition, but there is a noticable difference between 720p and 1080p. I wouldn't spend the extra money on 1080p unless you KNOW you're going to have a device that supports it (PS3, Xbox360). That's my professional A/V opinion | ||||

DLP typically offers great contrast ratios and darker isn't always bad. My sony tube tv is extremely dark but its part of why sony is one of the best Tube's on the market. Black is the hardest color to reproduce, darker tube sets, typically have better pictures when setup properly. The problem is the settings get all jacked up in stores. I'd bet that DLP would be just fine if it were adjusted... Also make sure you get the 5point color wheel DLP its worth the extra hundred or so bucks and that one you have listed might already have it.

I just have to convince the wife that a new plasma or lcd isn't just "wanted" but actually "needed".
