Help me pick out a HDTV 40" or smaller

Alright, well I was pretty sure I was set on the Sony KD-34XBR960, it's from '04 I think, but is still a great TV.. but I really don't want to order it online and the stores around here have stopped carrying it.

LCD seems to be too expensive, I need something around 2 grand. It needs to be HD ready and all that good stuff.

What is your suggestion?

Do you need 1080p or will 720p suffice?

I honestly don't know the difference in quality tbh. I know 1080p is better, but is it THAT much better?

I mean, I'd greatly prefer the 1080p if possible but I'm not dead set on it.

Also, there's 1080i in there too right?

Oh, and are you only looking CRT or do you have enough room for a rear projection?

I thought CRT and Rear Projection were about the same depth?

From what I have been reading (I've been shopping around. May get one with tax return) 1080p isn't really worth it unless you are going 50+ inches and plan on sitting closer.

edit- and you have a source that runs at that resolution

The price on the 720's are certainly more attractive.

I would stick with Sony (even though you pay a premium for the name), Panasonic or Samsung. I have had good luck with those brands.

I think CRT's are deeper. I haven't looked at one in a while.

In the $2K range you can find a DLP with 1080P in the 50 inch range.

I saw this in store and thought it looked good.

Buy the Samsung 50" DLP Projection HDTV (HL-S5087W) and other Projection TVs at circuitcity.com

42 inch DLP that does 720P at nearly half that price.

Buy the Samsung 42" DLP Projection HDTV (HL-S4266W) and other Projection TVs at circuitcity.com

I like Sony as well, their TV's seem to be of the best quality for sure.

I don't mind 720p at all, this has to be 40 inches or smaller, or I wont be able to fit it where I need to unfortunately. The thing that worries me about rear projection is viewing angle, needs to be pretty wide if I'm going to do it.

I don't mind CRT either.

I've been partial to Sony when I look at them in the stores. They always seem to have the best picture. Don't know much about TVs, but make sure whatever model you're looking at has HDMI. Some older ones won't. I also like Samsung for their price/quality combo.

Hmm, yeah viewing angle will move you away from DLP.

In that case I would look into LCD. Westinghouse makes good lcd's with fantastic prices.

Amazon.com: WESTINGHOUSE - Flat-Panel TVs / TVs & HDTVs / westinghouse: Audio & Video

That's just what I found on Amazon. Bestbuy.com seems to be down at the moment. I have seen these in store and they look really good. The price tag looks even better.

After doing some reading it seems that as long as it's DLP rear projection the viewing angle is pretty damn wide.. way better than the rear projection of old anyway.

There's better deals, though.

HP Pavilion MD5020n 50" 720p High Definition DLP TV Hewlett Packard L1735R md5020n

I wanted that one so bad. I'm still thinking about getting it, but I don't have a place to put it at the moment (I'm having house work done). $899 for a 50" DLP.

The viewing angle is better than the old rear projection, but nowhere near as good as lcd or plasma.

For 2 g's you can get a good DLP...

btw sony makes a decent tv in large sizes but they're not as good as their tube tv's and you pay too much for them.

2 g's huh? Let me see what I can find....

This one has a 5 segment color wheel ftw!

46" DLP Widescreen HDTV

What you need to do is try to find a 1080p in your price range. You'll be able to but you'll just sacrifice some screen size to do it. But finding a 40 or smaller in 1080p for 2g's should be doable.
