| A Sad Things: Teen Violence 3 Teens Arrested in Beating Shown Online Email this StoryJan 16, 11:33 PM (ET) p {margin:12px 0px 0px 0px;} NORTH BABYLON, N.Y. (AP) - Three teenage girls were arrested Tuesday on charges that they punched and kicked another girl and recorded the beating so they could broadcast it online. Police did not release their names because they were being charged as juveniles. Two are 14, and one is 13. Police in Long Island's Suffolk County said the video showed the three girls beating a 13-year-old girl Dec. 18 at a school. The video was shown on two Web sites. The beaten girl wasn't hospitalized and didn't tell her parents, police said. The three girls were arrested on charges of juvenile delinquency and attempted assault. Police were investigating who taped the incident. My Way News - 3 Teens Arrested in Beating Shown Online Why do these things happen? I wish I knew how to stop. It sends bad messages if a teen has to get excitement from taping a beating. | ||||

| part of me says "it happens because we're not paying enough attention to our young...they're out there with nothing constructive to do, no direction, parents who are more worried about making payments than raising kids, neighbors who close shades when they hear a scream........... we need to get kids excited about learning, we need to give them more positive venues to explore and seek approval, we need to help kids (even if that means forcing them) to realize that school and education are the answers to just about every problem they'll face in life." another part of me says "it happens becuase the kids doing the beating don't publically get the fucking shit kicked out of them when they're caught." every time I think about an issue like this I try to figure out which is the right answer and I come to the conclusion the right answer and the answer I'd most like might not be the same. | ||||

| Why? The reason is because society glorifies violence. Despite the laws against it violence is not seen as that bad a thing - it is allowed on TV, in games etc. I am not saying it shouldn't be allowed, but the attitude it is presented with is one of justification. From news of wars and conflicts, to parental examples, to societies attitudes. Herein lies the root causes of the incident. While giving them the right sort of attention could help, beating them up is going to be hit and miss. They may learn not to get taught, they may learn to take revenge, they may learn not to do it or they may become depressed and confused (being punished for something society condones). | ||||

Because punishment would come surely and swiftly, and it would not be a cozy prison cell with cable TV and balanced meals. One of the biggest problems with crime today is that we're too pussy'fied to actually PUNISH people for doing bad things. And what 7k said- where are the PARENTS?

| No. I am probably going this year. Originally Posted by AVengeance Some of the manga is very .. strange. The Japanese are not nearly as conservative about sex as is the west, though they are more conservative about other things.
I would dispute it is punishment that deters the Japanese (and sex with high school girls is actually more common and more legal). It is culture that causes them to act as they do. There is a low crime rate, and a high conviction rate. It is also shaming to commit crimes, and honor is still important to the Japanese. An example is where someone was robbing a store and they requested the thief pay for some food he was eating. He complied with the request. There is no proof that being heavy-handed is more effective. | ||||
