FDA and 5-7 years of expensive testing while the patent only lasts 10 years

No, the article is clear in that the generics are pushing them over the edge, but the combination of many things is causing it.

Merck and Pfizer are both doing well. Merck is a pretty good company from what I've read with great benefits.

yes there is.

people will engage in free exchange when they see the benefit of trading their dollars for the product

if the cost of the item is greater than the benefit they perceive from having the money, they will not engage in exchange.

this will cause the company to reduce price or change its practices.

oh, right. that's liberal.

If GM starts blaming crash testing on its troubles should we change everythign because one company is having problems?

Should we change everything because one company blames its problems on the testing of medicine? Do you ever think that they have other problems internally and are blowing smoke? Oh wait, they must be right.

so what's all this hubub about?

I'm confused.

Should we help business, or should we let the market decide? Because I'm hearing a bunch of doublespeak here on LL.

I hear people that adapt views of principle based upon holding a specific ideology.

I see people on one hand talking about minimum wage hurting the free market system, and yet here I see the complete opposite, essentially wanting a political answer to a corporate problem.

What doublespeak?

Pfizer is doing well but to maintain its return on assets and lower prices they have to cut people.

because any other industry is anything close to comparable ?
GM doesnt have to keep its new products off the shelf for most of their production life.

Patents last 10 years. BUT by the time they get to the market, they already ran through 5-8 years of the patent. So they get a very short time to sell on their own then they get raped by generics.

Maybe they should cut overhead, cut overspending, cut advertising, etc.

Blaming the FDA for all the company's woes is just passing the buck.

No one is blaming the FDA for all the company's woes. There's a host of reasons that are the problem here that have been discussed in detail in the past.

They could cut advertising, they are cutting overhead (hence the 10,000 jobs) and like most corporations are always trying to avoid overspending but there's probably room for improvement here, there usually is in any large organization.

In a free market there would be no patent laws at all. Patent laws are an artificial restriction.
