Israel bombs Beirut bunker where Hezbollah leaders are believed to hole up

JERUSALEM, July 19 (Xinhua) -- Israeli warplanes dropped bombs late Wednesday on a bunker in southern Beirut where senior Hezbollah leaders were thought to be, the military said.

Israel Defense Force (IDF) officials said that dozens of fighter jets participated in the massive air strike on a south Beirut target, acting on IDF intelligence.

Intelligence stating that Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah was staying in the bunker was received Wednesday night, and numerous IDF jets were dispatched to the place shortly after.

Following a brief discussion, IDF officials decided that the information was sufficiently credible to act upon and launch a massive bombardment on the area.

Hezbollah's al-Manar television channel reported that the planes blasted a building that was under construction in the Bourjal-Barajneh quarter where a Palestinian refugee camp is located.

According to army officials, the building itself was completely destroyed and the IDF was checking the results of the strike.

If this is true that would be fantastic. I heard this several times throughout the night on the news, however, it doesn't seem that anyone has verified it.

If they were indeed killed, I hope it will be a signal to the end of violence in Lebanon. Something tells me though, that a new leader will emerge and simply continue ordering rockets, etc, to be fired into Israel

I still think that short of an international peacekeeping force, the fighting is going to continue escalating.

Sometimes killing leaders like that only pisses their followers off even more. They would have to kill the entire semblance of leadership at once to really make a difference.

Their followers aren't savable. They're either going to die attacking Israel or die when Israel attacks them. It dosen't matter how pissed off their followers are. What Israel is doing to Lebanon's general civilian population is WORKING. Lebanon's people are turning on Hezbollah, and they're losing their popular support from the people.

CNN confirmed earlier in the day that there was a construction site, with a sign claiming that it was going to be a mosque, that had a bunker built underneath it.

The only reason I could think of for having a bunker underneath a mosque is that terrorists are shielding their facilities with civilian religious centers, also known as a war crime.
