ICPP report to be released hailed by top US scientists, man-made GW "no brainer"

WASHINGTON - Human-caused global warming is here — visible in the air, water and melting ice — and is destined to get much worse in the future, an authoritative global scientific report will warn when it's released next month.

“The smoking gun is definitely lying on the table as we speak,” said top U.S. climate scientist Jerry Mahlman, who reviewed all 1,600 pages of the first segment of a giant four-part report. “The evidence ... is compelling.”

This segment, written by more than 600 scientists and reviewed by another 600 experts and edited by bureaucrats from 154 countries, includes “a significantly expanded discussion of observation on the climate,”

That report will feature an “explosion of new data” on observations of current global warming

Global warming is “happening now, it’s very obvious,” said Mahlman, a former director of NOAA’s Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Lab who lives in Boulder, Colo. “When you look at the temperature of the Earth, it’s pretty much a no-brainer.”

Expect the ‘iconic statement’
Look for an “iconic statement” — a simple but strong and unequivocal summary — on how global warming is now occurring, said one of the authors, Kevin Trenberth, director of climate analysis at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, also in Boulder.

The February report will have “much stronger evidence now of human actions on the change in climate that’s taken place,” Rajendra K. Pachauri told the AP in November. Pachauri, an Indian climatologist, is the head of the international climate change panel.

Study: Behavior is warming 'smoking gun' - World Environment - MSNBC.com

I think with Bush even admitting to Global Warming in his upcoming SOTUA tommorow, and the overwhelming science being reinforced yet again, this time in an overwheling manner...this could be the turning point like with the ozone where finally people stop debating and start acting

Corporations are already getting together to pressing the government to make "carbon caps" and carbon trading so that they are forced to be regulated

The scientific community, regular people, corporations, foreign governments...the only holdouts are a few conservative senators and lingering skeptics

I don't believe recent events can conclusively be linked to Global Warming. I'm not saying they're not, I'm just saying that looking back only a few years isn't a good indication.

It's more of looking back at really old data and getting more and more of it, and using today's changes

Example, ice cores have existed for thousands of years, yet only recently have we looked at them, that doesn't mean we are only looking at today's weather and making snap judgements, its just more data is in...

'The really chilling thing about the IPCC report is that it is the work of several thousand climate experts who have widely differing views about how greenhouse gases will have their effect. Some think they will have a major impact, others a lesser role. Each paragraph of this report was therefore argued over and scrutinised intensely. Only points that were considered indisputable survived this process. This is a very conservative document - that's what makes it so scary,' said one senior UK climate expert.

not much to add to this, as the two articles really speak for themselves. but to insist global warming is not happening seems silly, as this report is agreed upon by the scientific community.

I doubt anyone denies the climate is warming.

The debate is over what (who?) is causing it.

Interesting report. I wonder if it will change any minds.

I don't think anything will stop them from questioning global warming. If they admit to it, then the debate becomes "do humans contribute to it?" If they admit to that, then the question becomes "do humans contribute a significant amount to it?" Then, they accuse people who believe in global warming as saying that humans are the ONLY cause. If we can convince them that we aren't saying that at all, then they think that we're in the pocket of big enviromental (such a huge, greedy organization, nothing at all like big oil) Even if you manage to convince them of all that, then they point the finger at China.

Hmmph. Most of these same people that deride global warming like to think of themselves as advocates of "personal responsibility." Meanwhile, the co2 levels keep rising...

Thats pretty much it. All this "it hasn't been this warm since 1932" or "It hasn't been this warm in 300 years" simply tells you that it has been warmer in the past WITHOUT our intervention.

I agree with you that you can't rule out the impact we're having and that we need to strive to become more effecient, but these blanket statements are ridiculous and I think they're nothing more than scare tactics.

Something telling me a 1600 page report taking years involving hundreds of the best scientists of the world does not boil down to "it hasn't been this warm in x years"

So many top scientists say this, so many top scientists say the opposite. You have to take the whole picture for what it's worth, not just one side. The point is nobody knows anything for sure.

All scientists agree on blood delivering oxygen to the body...why? Because it's been proven beyond a doubt.

From your own article.
Nearly all climate scientists believe the Earth is warming and that human activity, by increasing the level of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, has contributed significantly to the warming.

But within the broad consensus are myriad questions about the details.
This isn't a 50/50 believe/disbelieve in human caused GW. It's a matter of the specifics.

the 12 pages is so it dumbs down a 1600 page report for them, you really think Bush is going to read 1600 pages? He'd read 12 though if it got enough praise
