But that is not my point. We did not run from Korea as is suggested. That would be Vietnam. I know because President Nixon ended that and Webb didn't bother to give me a quote!

I thinky you're reaching and no, there are no NG there right now. There is no combat. No extended tours.

And Webb didn't quote Vietnam for a reason...first we support the troops unlike in Vietnam, and also the dems aren't pushing for such a withdraw.

McCain earlier mirriored what I feel will happen, a withdraw to the borders after this round fails.

watching it is even better

I'm surprised the right-wingers here won't even acknowledge what a good response it was

Both speeches (SOTUA & Response) were great. This was Bush's best speech in years. Unfortunately, much of what he promised and the Democrats' response promised won't come about, as they never do.

Because he said pretty much nothing.

His energy initiatives never get done, hasn't for 6 years.
His health plan is just too clunky and honestly I'm not feeling it.

Hardly ANY Presidents follow through with their SOTUAs.

I wasn't commenting on the actual chance of the plans coming to pass, merely that this was, in fact, one of his best speeches.

I thought his speech was done very well. Probably his best speech yet. He talked about some key issues that I consider important and said how they would be addressed. I thought Jim Webb's response was very good too. He also brought up issues that I'd like to see the govt. work on. If we were going on the speeches alone and not focusing on the details of the substance, i would say i agree with nearly everything he said.

The problem i have is the methods for which they are goin to carry out these goals. Just as one example, immigration reform.. he speaks of it.. it needs to be done.. but his idea is horrible imho.

I don't see how any reform will work unless we secure the border first. Anthing approaching amnesty, no matter what you call it, will bring a new wave of people trying to get in before we get angry enough to get serious on the sheer numbers coming over. Good news today with the crackdown on the criminal ones. Sends a message they cannot come an go through this country at will and do what they please.

It is a trash Bush website. Sure it has a link to Webb's remarks, and a link to several Bush Satire SOU clips and none to the Presidents actual remarks. It is also the place where the Condi pic came from. If this is where people get their political insights I feel all the more comfortable with mine, thank you very much.

again, the video he linked to was unedited and the site has no bearing on the video itself, which is why the comment was meaningless.

The problem is that GWB thinks the criminals are limited to drug dealing murderers and possible terrorists. He ignores that the ones who cross illegally are also technically criminals as they are breaking our laws. While they are not drug dealers and have honest intentions, it is still breaking the law. I dont rob the convenient store and look for sympathy because i was going to give the money to the salvation army.

I do agree we need to secure the border first. If your boat is leaking you have to fix the hole before bailing the water.I agree that we need more patrol agents to cover the couple thousand miles of territory. We also need fences and technologies employed to try and stop as many of those coming here illegally as possible, whether it be to sell drugs or build retaining walls. We also can't be afraid to send them back if they are caught here.

If we remove the illegals wages will not be artificially low and we would not even need to speak of minimum wage increases because the market would adjust accordingly. We also keep Meth, coke, and nasty weed out of this country. Immigration reform should include good weed only policy.
