Dems kill proposal to raise fines on employers who hire illegals

Most everyone here at one time or another agreed that steps needed to help curb illegal immigration into this country was to stop the incentive, but fining businesses who hired illegals. I can't think of one opposition to that off the top of my head from LL.

Allah has it worded nicely, but I want to highlight some of the more hilarious points.

Basically Jeff Sessions, along with the minimum wage hike, wanted to fine businesses who hired illegals, citing that illegals hurt minimum wage workers, and suppressed minimum wage standards.

Ridding the economy of illegal aliens, he argued, would do far more to help low-income wage earners than simply raising the minimum wage. Not only do aliens displace U.S. citizens in the work force, he said, they also artificially suppress wages…

One of the reasons “that those salaries have lagged behind is because of a large influx of illegal immigrant labor,” he said. “That is indisputable, and it’s not been discussed much here. People apparently don’t want to talk about it, but we’re going to talk about it.”

What's hilarious is that Democrats opposed it:

But Democratic leaders refused to let Mr. Sessions’ alien amendment reach the Senate floor yesterday, and they accused him and other Republicans of offering amendments unrelated to the minimum-wage increase in order to stall passage of the bill…

But:

Mr. Sessions’ proposal came directly out of the employer-sanctions section of the immigration-reform bill approved with overwhelming Democratic support last year.

I just think it's hilarious that the Dems so overwhelmingly rejected something directly taken from a bill they so overwhelmingly supported when they were the minority.

Think they have the best intentions of this country in mind? Of course not! They just don't want to ever show support for Republican ideas!!!

This is just ridiculous. The Dems shouldn't go back on their word. Stronger immigration laws was part of their core ideals when they were running. Just because it's not part of their 100 hours doesn't mean they should snuff the people who actually thought they cared about this.

A crackdown on employers was a major part of the 80's Amnesty. The part that never got properly funded or enforced. And we know what happened next.....

Instead of "ridding the economy of illegal aliens" that undercut legal workers, why not just make them all citizens. That way, everyone gets paid minimum wage, pays taxes, etc. And employers wouldn't be entices to hire illegals because they save so much money.

edit: but I agree, enforcing existing laws on businesses should be done

I don't agree with amnesty for the simple fact that they came here illegally while so many people are on a wait list to do it properly. I'd rather put them on a guest worker program and give the people on the wait list more far more rights to reward people for doing the right thing and not the wrong thing.

Yes it does. We need to be able to control the movement of people across our borders, in case of war or other threats.

That being said, if you want to come live here, you should be able to. Purriod.

I agree with the first part, the second no we should be able to pick and choose who we want in our country.

Does that include a minimum wage, health care, public education, drivers license, college funding, emergency health care, untaxed wages, transfer of same in any amount to a foreign country, a legal path to citizenship if on U.S. Soil and automatic citizenship to any native born on U.S. Soil.

We wont get into the environmental damage do to exponential population growth and the cost of running basic public utilities and emergency services for all these people as a "right." Let the libs do that.....

Stuff much worse than this is already law. Employers can be prosecuted for this. They just aren't. Likewise, the states as well as the federal government already have the authority to build walls and prosecute employers for hiring illegals. It's just that the laws on the books aren't being enforced. If you want a massive conspiracy then this is it.

So this whole debate about passing all of these laws is pretty much a total hoax. Americans should be demanding the laws are enforced, not trying to pass new, watered down legislation that is already in place.
