Unemployment up, and more great economic news

Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 113,000 in July, and the unemployment rate rose to 4.8 percent, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported today.

ftp://ftp.bls.gov/pub/news.release/empsit.txt

That's about half of what a normal economy should be increasing just to adjust for population growth

4.8% is pretty darn low

you should thank those high minimum wage states for the higher unemployment

actually those states have great economies, and I value poverty levels more than I do some woman working 80 hours a week making 20k a year with minimum wage

the nation’s official poverty rate rose from 12.5 percent in 2003 to 12.7 percent in 2004

Right as Nixon was taking office and LBJs Great Society was taking effect, the poverty level was 11.1 in 1973

33 years and our povery level has gone up...wonderful

As opposed to 1900 where a majority of americans lived in poverty
Post-WW2 when that was reduced a quarter, and Kennedy where it was reduced to a 19%

So much progress, now we are going backwards...thank you conservative economics

comparing poverty levels over decades is bullshit. People below the poverty line today frquently have cable TV and cell phones. IMO poverty in the US is almost nonexistant and where it exists it is usually the fault of the people themselves.

Tell me how an illegal immigrant can come here without the right to work, get a driver's license or vote can work their way to buy a house while so many other people are "stuck" in poverty.

4.8% is considered full employment, no issues with that.

The point is the poverty line moves, it shifts and as standards of living increase so does the poverty standard.

The only number I can link to is 10,000 a year IF YOU'RE SINGLE AND HAVE A KID

take off the kid, I remember it was around 7-8k a year, but i can't back that up

BTW, add up all the welfare checks, and you get less than 7,000 a year if you have a kid...you HAVE to work or find other ways to get cash...AND you are forced off after a few years

I believe you have to be making less than 12k/yr with kids in NYC to qualify for food stamps. I don't know about welfare.

food stamps is welfare

for TANF, you need kids

there is some myth that there are these single black fat dudes walking around loaded on welfare...when they only qualify for 2,000 in federal food stamps ALL YEAR

Your federal tax dollars don't give them a cent more

I dunno, welfare, public housing, food stamps, it adds up. You can live off it without having to work. In fact, many people do.
The whole point of these programs is so that if you're not working, you can afford to live.

It's difficult to get public assistance, at least from the few people I know who have really needed it.
