I think because he put it in the context of African Americans in general. I don't think any harm was meant, it just sounds bad. If a Republican had said it certain people would look at it as an Uncle Tom kind of compliment.

Hate to disagree with my peeps, but I think Biden's comment was racist. And I agree that liberal leaning people would be piling on a Republican who said the same thing, and rightly so. However, it is being widely covered on the news. It was an awful and awfully stupid thing for Biden to say.

I am glad that a few people who post consistently against PC behavior are being consistent by defending Biden. I think they're wrong when they try to say it wasn't racist, though. They should support Biden just for being un-PC.

Democrats who can't stop saying stupid things: We need to just leave them behind. They're dragging us down. Biden is a good man and I agree with him on many, many issues. But, times are too important and the stakes are too high for someone who can't watch their tounge better, don't you think?

I don't see how it's racist really. It was definitely not politically correct because he's a white guy talking about race in reference to a black candidate, but aside from being a stupid political move, I don't see the racism involved.

He's not insulting other black people. He's telling the truth. There has never been another black candidate like Obama. Alan Keys is not even close. Sharpton? Get real.

He was trying to praise Obama's qualities, it just came out poorly. Just like when he was talking about the Indian people who have come to his state.

He's got a chronic case of foot in mouth disease, but it doesn't make him a racist.

I personally think that Biden's statement is insulting to every other black person that has run for president. I agree that Obama may be the first mainstream candidate, but Shirley Chisholm, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Alan Keyes, and Carol Mosely-Brown are all bright, articulate, and clean. Biden, however inadvertently, implied otherwise.

It was a gaffe. I understand that. He was trying to pay Obama a compliment in that twisted way you do when talking about an opponent, and you're right, he stuck his foot in his mouth. I don't think he's a racist, but I do think that what he said was a racist sounding statement. It may be inadvertent, but he said what he said.

To me the way he used the word "Clean" was odd. If anything the flap got him far more attention than just his anouncement would get. He will not get near that nomination so who cares?
