Schools should teach life skills and practical skills as a primary.

Eg:

Beyond simple math it should be a choice to learn more complex mathematics, teach people instead to manage money.

Teach people about how others think. Teach people to think for themselves

They do. 90% of math you'll use in everyday life is taught by the end of 8th grade. The other 4 years are to teach you how to think more than they are to teach you how to "math."

Not very good ones. People in general don't understand the money system or how it works. Hence they always trying to "keep up".

Middle class acting as though they are rich etc.

I taught my 7 year old about how to handle a gun. He can definitely tell the difference between a toy and real weapon. And he knows that if a real weapon is ever picked up by another child when he is around that he is to leave and get me or another parent immediately.

Gun safety taught at school would be ok with me, like someone else said, they teach about drug, sex, driving safety etc. But why they taught about hunting, I have no idea.

gun safety = hunting ??

While you were teaching your 7 year old about gun safety you also *HAD* to teach him the most efficient place to shoot a deer, moose, and bear? Wow...I guess I didn't complete my son's gun safety lesson because, although he also learned the difference between a real and toy gun and to get an adult if a child picked up a gun, I failed to teach him not to paunch a deer.

For all the same reasons liberals argue for more and more detailed sex education. If you know how to use it properly, isn't it less likely that you'll cause trouble with it?

PS Sorry for bumping a dead thread.

That's a very new outlook. Shooting was always taught in schools until about 50 years ago. It even used to be a competetive school sport.

In any nation that allows anyone to use a gun, they should damn well know how to use it safely

I couldn't agree more. I can't say that I would be happy if I found out my daughter was going through a mandatory firearms class in school.

This nation allows people to skydive, ride a motorcycle and swallow swords. Should there be mandatory classes in schools for those things as well?

A parent can have a child removed from any of those classes. They are not mandatory.

"pussyhurt"???

it means parents have the right to determine what their children are taught. if it's a controversial topic, the school should defer to the parents for permission before they teach it... that goes for sex ed (in some states), drivers ed requires parental permission, and even after school activities. gun "safety" is most definitely a parental permission required activity.

For the same reason children should be taught how to do things safely. Kids should be taught basic power tool safety, automotive safety, electrical safety, and weapons safety.

Would the parents be so offended that their children were learning why it's dangerous to unplug a toaster after you get out of the shower? Would the parents be so offended that their children were learning how to safely use a pneumatic NAIL GUN ?

Generally, the government school idea of gun safety is "if you ever see a gun, run and tell the police!"

I'm glad there's some actual education going on somewhere.

Of course, this is just ANOTHER in the ne'er-ending list of why there shouldn't even be government schools. Education is just too important to leave to lawyers.
