Gun safety classes should be taught

hunting classes should not be mandatory.

you know this is a silly argument

guns are throughout our society and a danger to anyone that doesn't respect them and know how to properly handle them

skydiving has nothing to do with gun safety.

When i went to school there were 4 or 5 "core" classes, which include things like math, english/literature, science, history. Then there were 2-3 electives you could pick from, such as foreign language, ROTC, shop class, CAD class, etc. Hunters safety, or overall gun safety was part of the ROTC courses.

All my kid needs to know is to not touch it and stay away from someone who is.

I see no need for mandatory gun safety in schools.

To expand on it, should we teach drivers ed to kids in grade school? They are around cars all the time. Perhaps they should be educated on the safe us of them.

If you want to teach your kids how to use guns, more power to you. That's your job as a parent, not the schools.

That would be all the more reason for me to want to touch one (mom n dad are SCARED of them!!! Let's get one and shoot it at tin cans!)

Your mentality is what the power elite LOVE. They want you to tell your kids that the guns are for the powerful. You are meek, you are a slave, a serf, you are NOT WORTHY. Guns are for the police and the military (and occasional gun nuts that kill Bambi).

Lessee... do you see a need for sex ed in schoools? How about tolerance toward gays? Macroevolution? Seriously, why not leave schools to do just the reading, writing, and 'rithmatic, and leave the rest up to the parents?

You do realize, of course, that kids are taught at a very young age, age-appropriate auto safety. As a young child, it amounts to "don't touch the parking brake and gear selector, and buckle up for safety!" Eventually, kids learn more and more; some at home and some at school.

I have taught my children age-appropriate gun safety. It wasn't until this past weekend, in fact, that I let my 8 year old shoot my AR15 (evil black assault rifle). I slowly acclimated him to gun safety at an age-appropriate level. How interesting that this post would be active now. My older kids already know how to safely handle and fire a gun, and have been through hunter's ed courses (as have I, of course).

You're right about one thing: more power to ME. More power to anyone that knows how to operate a device that can be used to defend ones self, ones property, and indeed, one's country. When we get invaded, you can't borrow mine unless you've had a safety course. You can just throw rocks at the bad guys. I'm sure that'll work really well.

I dont think this issue is as deep as the thread is trying to make it. It is not some mind control power elite struggle agains the common man to make slaves. It is not necessarily a bunch of anti-gun liberals. Some people prefer that their children are taught certain things, and certain things they prefer are left alone. The bottom line is that they were not told their children were going to be educated on guns and the proper way to shoot animals. That should have been told to them so the parent can decide whether they want that child to take that class.

You can make it so your child doesn't go through sexual education because you are made aware of it and know of the class ahead of time. Some parents do not want their children to go through gun education, and they were not made aware of it in advance. Regardless of whether you agree that kids should be taught about guns, people should get the choice on what they want their kids to learn. You obviously have your core classes and some electives. If you have a huge disagreement with all of it, or think you can teach better, home school them.

Personally I would prefer to teach my kids about guns and have them learn about something else in school, and I plan on addressing it way in advance before school would even be considering it.

Yeah, but I thought the schools know what is better for your children than the stupid redneck parents?

And what do you say to the parent who feels the same about sex education?

Where the fuck did I say anything about "guns are for the powerful, you are meek".

That type of rhetoric makes people on your side of the argument look like idiots.

My kid does not need gun education form the state at all.

Apparently so do the school boards.

But they are around the cars much more than any guns. Shouldn't they learn to drive. Otherwise they will just take the keys and kill people, right?

Here's a big pat on the back for doing what you feel is best as a parent.

Will you really hold me to that.

Ohh lordy, who will protect me when we are invaded by King George!

I know how to use a gun. My father taught me.

You are free to opt out of it if you want.

edit - I would also ask them to compare the numbers of accidental firearm deaths by minors to the teen pregnancy/STD numbers and get back to me.

Doesn't matter if they've had classes. The government has taught me that if they're smoking pot, your kid's not coming home alive.
