Imagine if a Christian priest or minister had prayed at a DNC meeting that those attending be guided away from the path of those doomed by God. In this, in any case, the Imam is echoing the Fatiha, the first sura of the Qur'an and most common prayer of Islam. It asks Allah: "Show us the straight path, the path of those whom Thou hast favoured; not the (path) of those who earn Thine anger nor of those who go astray." The traditional Islamic understanding of this is that the "straight path" is Islam -- cf. Islamic apologist John Esposito's book Islam: The Straight Path. The path of those who have earned Allah's anger are the Jews, and those who have gone astray are the Christians.

Personally I find this a bit strange. The Dems can do whatever they want, but isn't this a bit abnormal? This seems like a strange event to have at such an event. I mean "guide us to the right path <of Islam>" and "end the oppression and occupation <in Iraq." This seems a bit extreme to me.

I do not find it strange about the DEMS!
You know the old, "when in league with the devil" applies!
The Dems desire for our military to lose in Iraq. They desire for the muslims to win. So let the Imam bless the Dems , after all friends with the devil, friends with the muslims not much difference.

But it is strange for modern liberals to have a religious prayer at one of their events. That fact it's Islam is stranger. And the fact that they're preaching to join the right path of Islam and to end the oppression and occupation of Iraq is even stranger.

Probably merely a showing that are tolerant at a time when many other people are not. That would be my guess

I dont have much problem with this, but heaven forbid a christian do something like this. They'd burn him alive upside down on a cross if something like this came from a christian.

I think its ok fo rthe guy to pray, we're not a godless nation regardless of one's religion.

I do think Christians would encounter more hostility. people can pray if they desire, though it had been shown to be ineffective, at least in health terms

You have real issues my friend.

Anyway, back on "topic", who cares? Christians pray all the time at events. I've seen it done at the Democratic National Convention. Christian "teachings" are in all the Democrat speechs at the same convention. I think the "assessment" that "christians would be drawn and quartered" is total horseshit with no basis in fact. By the way, no hypocrisy in the "right" bitching, moaning and complaining about this though...right?
