| I know most of you are college students but if you have a few extra bucks Buffalo News - Story brings outpouring of donations to Iraq vet Organizers of an Aug. 12 fundraiser for injured Iraqi war veteran Mark Beyers say they were overwhelmed by the response to a story Thursday about Beyers and his wife, Denise, being mugged July 22 outside a restaurant in the Washington, D.C. area. Five men attacked the couple as they were leaving a restaurant, taking a break from Beyers' rehabilitation at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Beyers, 27, an Alden native who lost an arm and a leg in Iraq to a roadside bomb, was not injured in the robbery. His wife suffered cuts and bruises and lost $300 when their attackers emptied her purse. Donations for the previously scheduled fundraiser, sponsored by the Alden VFW but to be held at the larger Akron VFW Post, may be made by sending a check to the Alden State Bank, PO Box 238, attention Debbie Zimmerman, 13216 Broadway, Alden, NY 14004. Checks should be made out to the VFW Ladies Auxiliary 31280, with the notation Mark Beyers on the memo line. For information on the fundraiser, call Nancy O'Hara at 937-6785. He is a good friend of mine that I went to Iraq with. | ||||

| I imagine he already got back more than the 300 he lost...he wasn't harmed in the incident... Why not make a fund for all veteran amputees? Personally, I'd donate to Tammy Duckworth for Congress She lost both her legs and decent functionability of one arm | ||||

I know that in rough parts of Cleveland, the elderly are big targets, which is why their children make it known in the neighborhood that they either live with them or near then and will defend them at all costs, just to keep their parents from getting mugged and robbed. | ||||

| the worst part about eldery being robbed is that in court their testimony seems flighty so the jurors sometimes have mixed feelings on whether they really saw the guy...guilty guys go free all the time This one guy robbed like 10 elderly people, 4 testified, we had evidence that was thrown out that basically proved it was him (he had jewelry with an inscription on it that matched the victim's report, but was arrested improperly) so all we had was the testimony Jury didn't buy it, spent 2 days arguing it over, came back not guilty what we weren't allowed to say was that the guy already had raped a girl and beat up some other girl, and so already had 2 strikes...big friggin black dude anyway, if he would have been found guilty, the judge told me in private he was thinking of a sentence of 40-60 years, the guy was 32 so...basically life on the 3rd strike still on the streets as far as i know | ||||
