i'm just trying to stop this from becoming an undisturbed gun-worshipping service (guns are fun to fire, but thats about all they are to me, fun)

about DC, its pretty ridiculous, any gangster with decent drug money has a car, can pickup a gun from a gunshow in VA or maybe even through a source in MD, and then drive in DC and be fine...thats not "gun control" thats wishful thinking by DC legislators

I've lived in some crime ridden areas. I grew up just outside of DC when they were the murder capitol of the world. I went to sleep every night as a child to a symphony of gunfire and police sirens. I also went to school in Savannah and walked to class every day/night in a pretty crime ridden city as the buildings the school bought for classes were in run down sections of the city. So don't try to act like some billy bad ass because you walk past the hugstables house in Philly.

Your chances of getting into an accident driving to the corner store are also pretty slim, but I bet you wear your seatbelt.

And what exactly is offensive about people owning guns in a gated community again? I fail to see anything there other than a smug stubbornness and prejudice of gun owners.

Suburbs? Well I lived in North Philly which has about 1 murder a day

How many of your friends were shot? How childhood friends were arrested for crack/heroince dealing?

It's offensive because they come off like we are liberal idiots totally defensive and caving into criminals...when we deal with criminals on a daily basis and they only see them on Fox News

Exactly what statistics are you referring to? Everyone lives in a unique situation. You cannot say the odds of a home invasion are the same for a wealthy gated community vs. an apartment complex with a long history of break ins.

Furthermore, most events that people buy insurance for are statistically very unlikely to happen. If they weren't, insurance companies either wouldn't offer isurance or it would be prohibitively expensive. Does that mean isurance is a bunch of BS?

I view a gun as insurance to protect yourself against a situation where you're in danger and the police can't get to you. The cost of this insurance is the gun, the ammo, the time invested to train, and the chance of accidently shooting yourself or someone else. The cost/benefit makes sense in my situation; maybe it doesn't for someone else. Why paint with a broad brush?

it was a simple way of saying there is gun running because they are right next to or inside gun friendly states

What, are you saying they build guns in DC? You think they are smuggling 9mms across the mexican border rather than running them in from VA?

The majority of crime guns were once legally owned, its irresponsible owners that are to blame for much of this

I'm not sure why it's 'offensive', and I don't think that all of them are worried about roving bands of 'minorities'.

I think it's about wanting to feel safe. They want to feel like they can protect their home should the need arise, and I don't see how that's offensive at all. Criminals aren't going to follow gun laws anyway, because they're criminals.

Restricting law abiding citizen gun ownership like has been done in DC just leads to criminals having a huge advantage in being able to carry out robberies, home invasions, etc, because they know the population is unarmed and there's not a significant threat of bodily harm to them.

I'm not talking about enforcing gun control, I am talking about attitudes

Neither of the situations I gave you were suburban. The area where I grew up outside of DC wasn't a home development. I was across the street from a used car dealership and an apartment complex, directly next door was a black motorcycle gang. In Savannah my first apartment was literally next to the projects. I lived downtown and there were shootings in nearby clubs regularly.

As far as people I knew....well, lets see, I have one childhood friend who's currently serving a life sentence for murder (drove up and shot someone in the face with a shotgun...gang related I guess...I hadn't been in contact w/ him but my dad still hears from his mother sporadically) and I have another one who was shot and killed over drugs. I'm sure if I kept in better contact w/ my friends from then I could give you more examples, but they are 2 I can think of off of the top of my head.

...and again, you're not explaining to me why it's offensive rather than proving your hard headed prejudice of firearms.

Similiar situation with friends, had a good friend shot through the cheek and died because he dealt on the wrong side of the road, couple friends landed themselves in jail for heroine/meth, thats more South Philly though

anyway...

If I am so prejudice then why do I enjoy firing Glocks?

I find it offensive for obvious reasons, you hang around the same people I do (white republican gun owners) and you know how their suburban counterparts in gated communities look down on people like me because we don't feel the need to carry and actually find reasons not to carry, personal not political reasons

You are prejudiced and you just proved it right there by stereotyping people. As a matter of fact, I don't think any of my current friends own guns. I don't look down on your for not feeling the need to carry a gun. In fact, I don't care what you do at all, that's your own perogative. I do take offense with your snobby "better than you" attitude of those who do carry firearms. I don't have a CC permit, they're a pain in the ass to get in MD. I don't own a pistol and right now, I don't even have a firearm in my house at the moment.

So basically what you're saying is you take more offense to a very small percentile of gun owners, but yet you're lumping them together and finger pointing. I don't quite get where you are coming from here as from the info you've given in this thread is quite schizophrenic.

Yes, and I don't recall saying "you offend me TankRizzo"

I really don't see where you're confused like I have two positions

Well...your position on everything is quite fuzzy. From what I've gleaned you're pro-gun control yet enjoy firing a glock, and you're arguing points that no one has brought up (the whole gated community thing). That came out of left field and looked more like you were targeting us with your replies.

Complaining about certain gun owners is not "out of left field" and im sorry if you thought I was targetting you

I support certain current gun laws, I think "pro-gun control" and "pro-guns" is too black and white

Under what circumstances do you support a citizen's right to own a firearm? Same question for carrying a firearm, and for carrying a concealed firearm?

Yeah, I don't see it as black and white either. I would consider myself pro-gun on a great many points, but I am kind of on the fence about certain weaponry like semi/automatic machine guns, "cop killer bullets", etc...

Everyone has a civic obligation to own a gun and be trained by the government under our current system...so thats our "right" too bad its not enforced

You should read my 2nd amendment thread

Carrying?
Leave it to the states for right now

this is an example of why i like carrying guns:

8 Grocery Employees Stabbed in Tennessee

A knife-wielding grocery store employee attacked eight co-workers Friday, seriously injuring five before a witness pulled a gun and stopped him, police said.
he probably could have even shot the guy (he needed to) and not had to fight the law.
